Excel Shortcuts


Keyboard Shortcuts to use
with a Windows/PC Computer


You can avoid reaching for the mouse if you are familiar with keyboard shortcuts.
 

If you forget one of these, use the mouse and go to the menu bar.
 

In each pull down menu you will see keyboard commands given in the right side of the window.
Commonly used keyboard combinations
To use one of these combinations Hold the Ctrl or Alt key down and strike the letter key 

Ctrl+N
Open a new workbook quickly.
Ctrl+X
Cut- Removes the selection from the active document and places it on the clipboard.
Ctrl+O
Opens a previously saved document.
Ctrl+C
Copies the selection to the clipboard
Ctrl+W
Closes the active window, but does not Exit Excel.
Ctrl+V
Paste - Inserts the contents of the clipboard at the insertion point (cursor) or whatever is selected.
Ctrl+S
Saves the active document with its current file name, location and format.
Ctrl+A
Selects all on the active worksheet.
Ctrl+P
Prints the active file, also gives the opportunity to change print options
Ctrl+F
Find - Searches for specified text in the active document
Alt+F4
Exit - Closes Microsoft Excel.
Ctrl+B
Bold - Formats selected text; make text bold, or remove bold formatting
Ctrl+Z
Undo the last action. This selection can be repeated several times.
Ctrl+I
Italic - Formats selected text; make text italic or remove italic
Ctrl+Y
Redo - After an action has been undone, it can be reinstated in the document.
Ctrl+U
Underline - Formats selected text; make text underlined or remove underline

 




MOVING AROUND THE SCREEN USING THE KEYBOARD


Use your Up, Down, Left, Right Arrows and the Home, End, Page Up and Page Down keys to move around any application. The Tab key can also be used when moving around a dialog box, an options window or between cells in a table or within a database.
Move one screen up or down (Page Up) or (Page Down)
Move one screen to the right (Alt + Page Down)
Move one screen to the left (Alt + Page Up)
Move to the previous sheet in the workbook (Ctrl + Page Up)
Move to the next sheet in the workbook (Ctrl + Page Down)
Display the next window (Ctrl + F6) or (Ctrl + TAB)
Display the previous window (Ctrl + SHIFT + F6) or (Ctrl + SHIFT + TAB)
Scroll to display the active cell (Ctrl + BACKSPACE)
Turn scroll lock on or off (SCROLL LOCK)
Scroll one row up or down (UP ARROW) or (Down Arrow)
     with Scroll Lock turned on
Scroll one column left or right (Left Arrow) or (Right Arrow)
     with Scroll Lock turned on






How Do I Maximise The Current Window, Without Using The Mouse?

Press (SHIFT + ALT + SPACEBAR) then press X

Or

Press (CTRL + F10) works only in Excel

How Do I Minimise The Current Window, Without Using The Mouse?

Press (SHIFT + ALT + SPACEBAR) then press N

Or

Press (CTRL + F9) works only in Excel

How Do I Reduce (Not Minimise) The Current Window, Without Using The Mouse?

Press (SHIFT + ALT + SPACEBAR) then press R

or

Press ( ALT + ENTER + ENTER)

Or

Press (CTRL + F10) works only in Excel

How Do I Resize The Current Window, Without Using The Mouse?

Press (SHIFT + ALT + SPACEBAR) then press S
Move the window using two of the up/down/left/right arrows then press (ENTER)

Or

Press (CTRL + F8) works only in Excel.
Use your up/down/left/right arrows to adjust the window size. To accept your sizing changes, press (ENTER)

How Do I Move The Current Window Or Dialog Box, To A Different Position On The Screen, Without Using The Mouse?

Press (SHIFT + ALT + SPACEBAR) then press M
Your mouse pointer will change to a four-headed arrow. Move the window or dialog box using the up/down/left/right arrows then press (ENTER)

Or

Press (CTRL + F7) works only in Excel.
Your mouse pointer will change to a four-headed arrow. Move the window or dialog box using the up/down/left/right arrows then press (ENTER)

Is there an opposite function to F2 that would let me enter data at the beginning of a cell that would all ready have data as opposed to the end of it?
Move the cell you want to activate.
